VRAE air monitors and air test canister used by Texas Commission on Environmental Quality - TCEQ

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) uses a variety of equipment to keep tabs on air quality near Barnett Shale natural gas drilling operations. The yellow VRAE hand-held air monitors can detect explosive gases and stainless steel canisters hold air samples for analysis at a lab.

Six mobile monitors currently placed around the region track volatile organic compounds, such as benzene. These monitors look like small trailers with antennas. Additional monitors are planned for 2011. Results of air tests are available online.
