Earlier this month, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology disclosed their latest innovation: flexible photovoltaic cells printed on paper. They've filmed a video of their technology powering a small digital clock.
As with many technical innovations, thin film photovoltaics got an early boost from government grants. NASA funded a photovoltaics effort several years ago, leading to products that have since been commercialized, such as the solar cell roll shown in the photo.
