Definition:
The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) within the U.S. Department of Transportation develops and enforces regulations concerning the operation and permitting of natural gas and oil pipelines.
PHMSA is authorized to issue special waivers for natural gas and oil pipelines, publish safety advisories, sponsor safety standards, and conduct other activities to limit pipeline hazards.
